It is a huge volume, containing 48 chapters grouped into ten sections. A 5-chapter introduction (which includes commentary on international issues, multimedia analyses and regulatory frameworks) is followed by sections dealing with management issues relating to air pollution, water pollution, solid and radioactive waste, and hazardous waste. These sketch out the major environmental problems and issues, and emphasise technological control solutions. Next comes a useful overview of pollution prevention, then a rather rag-bag collection of chapters lumped together under the section title `Additional environmental concerns and management considerations' (which include health and safety, accident and emergency management, and environmental training). The four three sections deal with new technologies and approaches (with an emphasis on bioremediation, soil vapour extraction, and biofiltration), risk-related topics (including environmental risk assessment, and health and hazard risk assessment), and recent developments (including environmental audits, ethics and justice). The book is clearly written throughout, and contains some useful figures and tables. It offers a useful technical overview of many appropriate topics, and contains an up-to-date (but almost exclusively North American) bibliography.
On the down side, its provenance within the United States screams out from every page, and much of the treatment is oriented explicitly around EPA procedures and approaches. This gives the book a strong partisan feel, and may inhibit its usefulness in other countries (and particularly in developing countries where many environmental problems are most acute).

It will appeal much more to professionals than to students—this is more a `how to' book than a student-friendly text-book. Some chapters are also weaker and less balanced than others—this applies particularly to the final section (recent developments), to some chapters in the additional environmental concerns section and to the non-technical chapters in the introductory section. Nonetheless the editors are to be congratulated on compiling such a comprehensive volume, which should find a niche on the shelves of every self-respecting University Library, environmental research institute and consultancy outfit.
